Romania – among the EU states least dependent on energy imports in 2013

EU states least dependent in 2013 on energy imports were Estonia (11.9%), Denmark (12.3%) and Romania (18.6%), and countries with the highest dependence were Malta (104%), Luxemburg (96.9%) and Cyprus (96.4%), according to data published on Monday by the European Statistics Office (Eurostat).

In 2013, gross energy consumption in the EU amounted to 1.666 billion tons of oil equivalent, down 9.1% compared to the record level of 1.832 billion tons of oil equivalent recorded in 2006.

The main energy producers in the EU were, in 2013, France (135mln toe, 17% of EU’s total production), Germany (121mln toe, 15% of EU’s total production), UK (110mln toe, 14% of EU’s total production), Poland (71mln toe, 9% of EU’s production) and the Netherlands (70mln toe or 9% of EU’s production). Together, the five states were responsible for two thirds of EU’s total energy production.

Romania’s total primary energy production in 2013 (26.1 mln toe) was lower than that of the Czech Republic (29.9mln toe), but higher than that of Bulgaria (10.5mln toe) and Hungary (10.1mln toe).

Of the total primary energy production of Romania, in 2013, 17.8% was represented by solid fuels, 16.3% – oil, 32.9% natural gas, 11.5% nuclear energy and 21.3% renewable energy sources.
