WALDEVAR and SANY Launch a 95 MWp Solar and 220 MWh Energy Storage Project in Romania
WALDEVAR Holding is building two co-located energy projects for the SANY Group in Dobrești, Dolj County, with a capacity of 95 MWp of solar power, 220 MWh of battery storage, and the high-voltage infrastructure required for grid connection. The project represents a significant investment in clean energy production and in strengthening Romania’s energy security. The symbolic groundbreaking ceremony took place on Friday, August 14, when a SANY delegation from China, along with its partners, joined WALDEVAR representatives at the construction site in Dobrești.
The Dobrești project combines large-scale solar power generation with 220 MWh of battery storage and dedicated high-voltage infrastructure, including a 110/20 kV substation and a 110 kV underground transmission line. By storing energy generated during the day and making it available after sunset and before sunrise, the project will contribute to a more flexible and stable energy system and facilitate the integration of renewable energy into the national grid. The BESS system will also be able to provide grid balancing services as Romania expands its renewable energy generation capacity.
The project will contribute to Romania’s energy security by increasing the share of locally produced electricity from renewable sources. According to project estimates, the solar power plant will generate approximately 135 GWh of clean energy annually—enough to power about 50,000 households—while preventing the emission of approximately 40,000 metric tons of CO₂ each year.
For the local community, the project will generate economic activity and jobs during its construction and operation and will create long-term value through the local production of clean energy.
“We are pleased to strengthen our strategic partnership with WALDEVAR through this landmark project. The partnership with an industry leader, whose local expertise and reputation are fully aligned with our regional vision, gives us a high degree of confidence in our shared success“, said Mr. Guo Ruiguang, Board Chairman of Sany’s Microgrid Business Unit.
“WALDEVAR’s proven track record, technical expertise, and solid experience in building large-scale, complex infrastructure projects are essential to this project. Together, we are fully committed to delivering a project that meets the highest standards of quality, performance and long-term reliability,” said Mr. Xuzhongtian, General Manager of Sany’s Micro Grid Unit.
“For WALDEVAR, the project in Dobrești represents a milestone at a pivotal moment in the company’s development, given its scale, technical complexity, and the execution capabilities we are mobilizing. Our competitive advantages enable us to implement projects of this scale quickly and efficiently. At the same time, the project provides concrete proof of what our strategic partnership with SANY can achieve when we combine our expertise and capabilities to implement a major energy infrastructure project. We are proud to launch this project together and see significant potential for the development of our partnership through future projects in Romania and across Europe,” said Mr. Christian Leonte, CEO, WALDEVAR Holding.
As Romania ramps up investment in renewable energy production, projects such as the one in Dobrești demonstrate the importance of integrating clean energy production with storage solutions and grid infrastructure. Together, these components support Romania’s long-term goals regarding energy security, decarbonization, and the development of a more resilient energy system.
