COMPETITION COUNCIL ANALYZES THE CONDITIONS IN WHICH ROMGAZ AND PETROM SUPPLY GAS

The Competition Council has triggered an investigation to verify the conditions in which SNGN Romgaz SA and OMV Petrom SA supply gas to their own power plants.

Within the investigation started in February, the Competition Council will collaborate with ANRE to analyze whether the power plants within the structure of the two gas producers have benefited from different conditions compared to those under which SNGN Romgaz SA and OMV Petrom SA supply gas to other consumers in Romania.

The gas quantities produced annually by SNGN Romgaz SA and OMV Petrom SA, together, account for over 94% of the total domestic gas production. The two producers have integrated structures, including electricity production units using natural gas as fuel.

Thus, SNGN Romgaz SA is an electricity producer through the Electricity Production Branch (SPEE), which includes Iernut power plant, with an installed power of 600MW and an electricity generation capacity representing around 5% of the electricity production at national level. Also, within an experimental project of Romgaz SA, gas coming from two wells in Cojocna is used as combustion gas for two power generating units (each with an installed power of 1.5MW).

OMV Petrom SA is present on the electricity market in Romania both as producer and as supplier (it holds an electricity supply license since 2009). OMV Petrom SA owns Brazi power plant, with an installed capacity of 860MW (operational since 2012), which can ensure up to around 12% of the electricity demand at national level.
