Romania’s energy market watchdog proposes the Government to decrease the cogeneration fee, to lower energy bills

The National Energy Regulatory Authority proposed the Government to reduce the support granted for a quarter of energy and heat producers in cogeneration, because it has found that their aid has been too high, sources within the institution stated on Thursday for Mediafax news agency. The cogeneration fee is collected by companies that simultaneously produce electricity and heat and is paid by any consumer. The tax applies during 2011-2023 and its share in bills is 2-3%. The cogeneration tax is charged under an European directive, in order to support investments in high-efficiency energy generation technologies, and was authorized by the European Commission in 2010.
