Gas imports increased by 271.5% in January; production went up only 0.2%

Romania imported in January 2017 an amount of usable gas of 281,200 tons of oil equivalent (toe), by 271.5% (205,500 toe) higher than the amount imported in the similar period of 2016, according to data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics (INS). Domestic gas production totaled, in the first month of the year, 742,000 toe, being by 1,200 toe (0.2%) higher than that reported for January 2016. According to the draft Energy Strategy of Romania, published on the website of the competent ministry, the annual gas production is expected to drop slightly, to an average of 9-10bcm, during 2016-2030. The document mentions that gas production will drop, after reaching a new peak of 132TWh in 2025, as a result of production in the Black Sea, to 96TWh in 2030 and 65TWh in 2050. Low price scenarios provide for a decrease to zero of gas production starting with 2045.
