Two years ago, during a visit to Romania, the Moldovan Minister stated that the Republic of Moldova planned to replace between 15% and 30% of Russian gas imports with alternative sources, thus reducing their dependence on Russian gas. Therefore, Moldova follows with great interest the projects in which Romania is involved, such as Nabucco. In late May 2012, the Government approved a decision on the technical and economic indicators of the Ungheni-Iasi gas pipeline. It is a project included in the Moldovan-Romanian Cooperation Protocol from May 24th 2010. After completing the Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline, a large part of Moldova’s gas demand could be covered by imports from Romania, Valeriu Lazar stated last year, at the time Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister of the Republic of Moldova. Ungheni-Iasi gas pipeline will be built with financial support from the EU within the Cross-border Cooperation Program Moldova – Romania. According to the provisions, companies involved in the project are Romania’s Transgaz and Moldova’s Moldovagaz. The construction of the reversible gas pipeline has been agreed and included in the Moldovan-Romanian Cooperation Protocol from May 24th 2010 and in the Memorandum between the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Moldova and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business Environment of Romania, from October 25th 2010. The main purpose of the gas pipeline is to ensure an alternative source for natural gas supply in the gas transmission systems of the both countries. On the other hand, the pipeline construction is one of the conditions included in a convention signed in 1996 by Romania and the Russian Federation in order to supplement the amounts of Russian gas supplied to Romania.[/cleeng_content]
